Summer officially begins in Spain with the celebration of the Festival of San Juan.
It is traditional in the coastal regions to take to the beach every summer – just after the Summer Solstice.
With the longest day of the year just ended, Spanish people like to begin to party – the Feria’s begin (Festivals) and on the Costas (coasts) everyone goes to the beach, has a barbecue, sits with friends and family and enjoys themselves.
At midnight, everyone wades into the sea and washes away their blues in anticipation of a happy summer and a happy remainder of the year.
At 1 o’clock in the morning the fireworks begin to rapturuous applause and by daybreak most revellers will start to make their way home to some sleep!
Welcome to Spain!
