Blue Bar at the Berkely

Blue Bar at the Berkeley

The Blue Bar, inside The Berkeley Hotel in London’s Knightsbridge (walking distance of Harrods and Harvey Nichols) –  has completed a six-month refurbishment and is about to reopen.

The Bar now occupies a state-of-the-art glass extension at the front of The Berkeley, giving it a new sense of place. The bar retains the iconic Blue panelling originally conceived by David Collins studio, and its original Edwin Lutyens lighting, alongside refreshing new pieces designed by Collins’s protégé Robert Angell.

A glass of wine starts at £10 for 175ml of Coteaux d’Aix en Provence “Pentes Douces” 2014, and low alcoholic cocktails start at £15.

However, one can’t help, but be drawn to the Rare Champagne list – pictured below.

James-Bond-Bentley

James Bond author Jeffrey Deaver with Bentley Continental GT

Bond is back, and as ever he is sporting the best in luxury cars. In the pages of Carte Blanche, the new James Bond book by international best-selling author Jeffery Deaver, the fictional British spy has continued with his classic preference of luxury sports car by selecting the breathtaking new Bentley Continental GT as his transport of choice.

Jeffrey Deaver Author Bond Carte Blanche

Jeffrey Deaver, Author of Carte Blanche

Carte Blanche is due to be published by Hodder and Stoughton in the UK on May 26, a few days before the anniversary of Fleming’s birthday.  It has been commissioned by Ian Fleming Publications Ltd.

The book is partly set in Dubai, which is where the author and the new Bond car have been spotted, outside the InterContinental Hotel in Dubai Festival City. Bond’s new Continental GT certainly suits his character, with a fabled 6.0-litre, W12, twin-turbo engine capable of producing 567 bhp and 516 lb-ft of torque.

While James Bond’s new car may be better suited for a secret agent in understated tones, the author of the book admired a less inconspicuous model. Set in stunning white with a blood-red interior, the new Continental GT mixes svelte good looks with power, poise and exceptional prowess.

The hand-stitched leather interior contains all the high-tech gadgetry Bond could ever need. And with the famed sound dampening that only lets through the captivating sound of the wonderful engine, the cabin provides a true Quantum of Solace for Fleming’s jet-setting gentleman spy.

Jeffery Deaver sampled the stunning vehicle on his recent visit to the Emirates, where he commented, “I’m really excited about being back in Dubai.  It is an inspirational and awe-inspiring city and makes a perfect Bond location—especially for a novel that pushes our hero to new extremes.”

Regarding the book’s title, which was revealed in January, Deaver added: “In the world of espionage, giving an agent carte blanche on a mission comes with an enormous amount of trust and constantly tests both personal and professional judgement.  Part of the nonstop suspense in the novel is the looming question of what is acceptable in matters of national and international security. Are there lines that even James Bond should not cross?”

The James Bond of Ian Fleming’s original novels also opted for a Bentley. The world’s most famous spy would choose nothing less than the scintillating performance and second-to-none quality of the classic luxury car.

Jeffery Deaver has written 28 novels and sold more than 20m books worldwide.

He is best known for his Kathryn Dance and Lincoln Rhyme books, most notably The Bone Collector, which was adapted for film in 1999, starring Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie.

Before becoming a full-time author, Deaver was a journalist, like Fleming, and attorney. He started writing suspense novels on the long commute to and from his office on Wall Street. His books are now translated into 25 languages and he lives in North Carolina.

Benetti Tradition 105

Benetti Tradition 105

Tradition becomes longer and reaches 105 feet with the Benetti Tradition 105.

Tradition 105’ is the second of seven models of the new Benetti Class range to be built by Benetti in its shipyards in Viareggio and Fano.

The great success obtained ever since the first model of the previous 100’ range has led Benetti to evolve Tradition into the new 105’ version, whilst maintaining its unaltered charm and has included it in the new Benetti Class fleet that consists of yachts ranging from 93 to 164 feet.

The profile design draws the feeling felt in the entire range of Benetti Class designed by Stefano Righini. Here he has managed to diversify each model, thereby creating seven unique boats with distinctive features and extremely innovative technological equipment, even though they form part of the same project.

The following features stand out when compared to the previous model: the grand, rectangular portholes on the sides, the large glass doors on the main deck, the extended hull and the new shape of the stern, which all lead to the high seakeeping performance and manoeuvrability of the new Tradition 105’ together with great benefits in terms of speed and autonomy.

The features are complete with the addition of the bulb, which turned the new Tradition into an actual yacht with navigation standards enjoyed solely by grand mega-yachts.

The layout of the new 105-footer is completely transformed, its greatest novelty lies in the two main decks due to the position of the engine room amidships moved to the stern.

The new range confirms the distinct value of the Benetti brand, distinguished as an icon of ultimate elegance.

Italian taste, historical tradition and technological innovation are best expressed on board all Benetti Class Range models, offered with two kinds of interiors, classic or modern style.

Rolex limited edition Daytona

Rolex limited edition Daytona

The company that eventually would become Rolex was founded by Hans Wilhelm Wilsdorf and Alfred James Davis. Between them they created a company called Wilsdorf and Davis Ltd in 1905.

Born on March 22,1881. Wilsdorf’s job as a correspondence writer with the watch exporter Cuno Korten of Geneva, Switzerland gave him direct exposure to the international watch industry.

He became focused intensely on Horology-the study of creating timepieces.

His initial work was so successful he was able to make three watches that passed rigorous accuracy testing.

After such initial success, he decided to start his own watch company.

Hans Wilhelm Wilsdorf

Hans Wilhelm Wilsdorf

His English partner Alfred Davis would later marry his younger sister, turning the business into a family affair.

Wilsdorf and Davis Ltd was registered as “Rolex” in Switzerland in 1908 and later in London in 1912.

The name “Rolex” was chosen because it was clear, easy to spell, and easy to pronounce in multiple languages.

On Nov 15, 1915 Wilsdorf and Davis Ltd officially was renamed “The Rolex Watch Company Ltd.”

The company’s name was later modified to Montres Rolex, SA and finally became the company we know today as Rolex, SA.

Today, Rolex is the largest single luxury watch brand, producing about 2,000 watches per day, with estimated revenues of around US$3 billion.

In December 2008 the abrupt departure of Chief Executive Patrick Heiniger, for “personal reasons”, was followed by a denial by the company that it had lost SwFr1 billion (approx £574 million, $900 million) invested with Bernard Madoff, the American asset manager who pleaded guilty to an approximately £30 billion worldwide Ponzi scheme fraud.
