The Scottish Grand National – a Grade 3 National Hunt horse race for five-year-old and above horses is hosted at Ayr racecourse in April annually.
It is a handicap chase, and is often contested by horses which ran previously in the Grand National at Aintree. There are twenty-seven fences to be jumped in the race.
The two day Coral Scottish Grand National Festival, held mid-April on a Friday and Saturday is Scotland’s richest jumps meeting with more than £300,000 in prize money and £200,000 on offer for the National and a further £100,000 for the Samsung Electronics Scottish Champion Hurdle.
Ayr Racecourse is also known for The 6 furlong Ayr Gold Cup, run at the Western Meeting in September as one of the most competitive sprints in the Flat Racing calendar, attracting large crowds from all over the country
