Olivier Theyskens was born on January 4th 1977 in Brussels Belgium.

In October 1995, he entered the design section of the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Visuels de la Cambre but dropped out to start his own label.

His early designs could best be described as ‘Gothic’ made literally from sheets that his grandmother gave him…

Rumoured that he might take over at Givenchy, he suddenly fell out with his financial backer, closed his label, and moved to the Theatre de la Monnaie to create stage costumes.

Luckily for him, Madonna’s stylist walked into his press agent’s studio one morning and took one of Theysken’s outfits for her to wear at an event. She wore his dress to the Academy Awards no less and suddenly Thyskens rocketed to stardom overnight.

Always experimenting with design equations, Theyskens draws inspiration from historical references.

In one exhibition his models were famously dressed in birdcages with birdlike creatures adorning their heads.

It is designs like this that have forged his reputation as a cutting edge designer.

In 2006 Theyskens became artistic director at Nina Ricci. He has much success with the brand however the fall 2009 was his last collection for Nina Ricci.
As one critic put it – “he may have wowed the critics with his heeless shoes, but at Nina Ricci he didn’t sell much”. Ouch!
He has now joined Theory as Creative Director as of December 2010.
Peter Copping from Louis Vuitton has taken over his position as creative director at Nina Ricci.
