Jean-Paul Gaultier was born in 1952 and started his career in 1970 at Pierre Cardin.
He set up his own label in 1976, creating clothing that owed more to contemporary culture than Parisian couture.
Once dubbed the ‘enfant terrible’ of the Paris fashion scene – as Alexander McQueen would later be called – he was soon dressing pop stars and rock stars including famously – Madonna.
Gaultier enjoys parodying the fashion establishment and his work is infected with attempts to reject fashion clichés exemplified by his creation of a skirt for men in 1988.
Besides his men’s and womenswear lines and the haute couture collection, Gaultier has introduced JPG, a younger and sportier line for both sexes, and a range fragrances, starring in some of the campaigns himself.
In July 1999, Hermès invested $15 million in his business.
He has recorded music and designed costumes for many films including Peter Greenaway’s The Cook, The Thief, his Wife and her Lover (1989), Pedro Almodóvar’s Kika (1994) and Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element (1997).
In 2001 Gaultier received one of France’s highest honours, being awarded the title of Chevalier in the Bastille Day honours list.
